The symbol of Indonesia is the mythical garuda eagle but the mascot of Jakarta is a very real bird that you could see soaring over the city. Unfortunately the ‘elang bondol,’ or brahminy kite, may well be nothing but a legend soon – at least in Jakarta anyway.

Elsa, an adult female Sumatran tiger, has spent more than 1 year in a narrow metal cage measuring 1.5 x 2 meters. This horrible cage has injured her shoulder and leg.

Thai vets conduct health checks on 14 orangutans before their repatriation to Indonesia. Most of the animals have been confiscated from the entertainment business in Phuket; others were recovered from smugglers. The orangutans are being examined to ensure they are free of diseases and are expected to return to Indonesia in September
